VP of Finance & Business Operations

Avilar Therapeutics is pioneering the discovery and development of extracellular protein degraders, a new frontier in targeted protein degradation. Backed by RA Capital, Sanofi Ventures, Astellas Venture Management, and Medical Excellence Capital, Avilar is developing ATACs (ASGPR Targeting Chimeras), a new class of protein degraders that transports disease-causing proteins from circulation to the endolysosome where the unwanted proteins are degraded. Avilar is leveraging the ATAC platform to create a broad and diverse pipeline of first-in-class extracellular protein degraders for the treatment of autoimmune, cardiometabolic, and other diseases. Position Summary

We are seeking an exceptional VP of Finance & Business Operations to build and lead our finance function while providing strategic operational leadership as we advance our pipeline. Reporting directly to the Chief Business Officer, this individual will be a key member of the leadership team, and will shape the financial strategy of a cutting-edge biotech company while leading an efficient, high-performing finance function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and oversee all aspects of financial planning, accounting operations, and reporting
  • Lead annual budgeting, monthly forecasting, and long-range planning processes
  • Develop and implement financial controls, policies, and procedures
  • Oversee cash management, ensuring adequate runway while optimizing deployment of capital
  • Support fundraising activities including investor materials, due diligence, and deal execution
  • Manage R&D budget tracking and financial aspects of collaborations/partnerships
  • Build and manage relationships with investors, auditors, bankers, and other external stakeholders
  • Build and lead finance and accounting team as company scales
  • Oversee implementation of financial systems and tools to support growth

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive finance experience in biotech/pharma, with at least 3+ years in a leadership position
  • Track record of building finance functions in venture capital-backed biotech companies
  • Strong financial planning & analysis skills and technical accounting knowledge
  • Deep understanding of R&D accounting, clinical trial budgeting, and program economics
  • Experience supporting fundraising rounds and investor relations
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA and/or CPA
  • Previous VP Finance or similar role in venture capital-backed biotech
  • History of supporting successful financing rounds from Series A through IPO
  • Experience implementing ERP/accounting systems in growing organizations
  • Background in supporting BD and strategic collaboration transactions
  • SEC reporting and public company readiness experience

  • Proven track record of building and developing high-performing teams
  • Hands-on leader comfortable in fast-paced, resource-constrained environment
